Canary Islands Information
The Canary Islands are an ideal place to take your holiday or vacation at any time of the year due to the all year round great weather condtions they receive.
The Canary Islands form one of Spain's communities which have a degree of external freedom from the mainland's authorities and are self governing.
Forming one of Europe's most westerly regions, the archipelago of the Canaries are only 95km from the African mainland country of Morocco.
The group of Canary Islands consists of seven major islands - these being:
Tenerife - The largest and most populous of all the Canary Islands with an area of 2034 sq kilometres (785 sq miles) and a population of just under 1 million (2009). Tenerife is a favoured island for holiday makers from the UK and Europe and hosts a multitude of holiday rental properties to choose from. The majority of holidy rental accommodation is in the popular resorts of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Golf del Sur in the south of the island where temperatures are slightly warmer than in the north. Although a great selection of holiday rental property can be located across most of the island as well as in the popular resorts.
Fuerteventura - The second largest of the Canary Islands and probably the last to come to the holiday destination table from the four major islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote & Fuerteventura). Occupying an area of 1650 sq kilometres (637 sq miles), Fuerteventura boasts some of the best beaches of all the Canary Islands and the popular resorts of Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste are fast becoming some of the best areas for booking a holiday rental apartment, villa or other rental property type for accommodation.
Gran Canaria - Third largest in size yet closely behind Tenerife in population size - Gran Canaria covers an area of approx 1560 sq kilometres (602 sq miles). The majority of tourist who book holiday rental accommodation stay in the south of this Canary island which receives less rainfall and more sunshine than the north, similar to Tenerife. Favoured holiday rental destinations are Maspalomas and the popular gay resort of Playa del Ingles.
Lanzarote - The most eastern of the Canary Islands and smallest of the four major islands has an area of approx 845 sq kilometres (326 sq miles) and a population of little over 130,000. This Canary Island offers the most dramatic landscapes of all the islands - often described as lunar or Martian like. Lanzarote is very popular with UK and European holiday makers and has a great selection of holiday rental properties all over the island. Popular areas for booking private self-catering holiday rental property and accommodation are Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise in the east and Playa Blanca down in the south of the island.
El Hierro - The smallest of the seven major Canary Islands has a land area covering 278 sq kilometres (107 sq miles) and a population of just over 10,000. El Hierro has its own small airport and ferry service which connects to the major Canary Island of Tenerife. Holiday rental accommodation on this island is sparse in comparison to the other islands but an excellent choice for those seeking the quiet life.
La Palma - This Canary Island is the fifth largest with an area of 706 sq kilometres (273 sq miles) and is host to a population of just over 86,500 inhabitants. This island boasts the most diverse and abundant plant life of all the islands. Holiday rental property can be found all around this island.
La Gomera - The second smallest of the seven major Canary Islands with an area of approximately 370 sq kilometres (143 sq miles) and a population of just over 22,000. Holiday rental accommodation in La Gomera is slightly less sparse than its neighbour El Hierro but all the same some beautiful properties can be found throughout this island.
The smaller islets which, with the above major islands make up the 'Canary Islands' are:
La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Lobos. With the exception of Lobos which is located just off the north-east coast of Fuerteventura all other islets are located off the north coast of Lanzarote.
